Vehicle Scrappage Policy

Vehicle Scrappage Policy

Running a junk of "half-dead metal" on road, emitting horribly black smoke finding its way into the lungs of anyone passing-by. Ugly cringe-worthy motor sounds on the road screeching through the ears. Sounds horrible isn't it? This is what almost everyone experience while travelling in most parts of the country but we don't do anything.

According to the study which was conducted by the Central Pollution Control Board, there are more than 9 million vehicles currently plying on the road which ages more than 15 years. Well, let me tell you that these vehicle generates pollution 10 times greater than any other vehicle on the road which are manufactured recently. To control contamination to the environment, Govt is trying to initiate a new policy since 4 years which is called as Vehicle Scrappage Policy.  In fact, the ministry of road transport and highways is set to float new guidelines that will formalise how the setup  for the new scrappage facility will be driven across the country.

Fact check: Around 2300 million tonnes of CO2 were generated in India alone in 2018 as per study by International Energy Agency (IEA). This is an alarming number.

In this article we will know about the Vehicle Scrappage Policy, when it will be implemented and how will it affect the social, economic and environmental aspects and what will be its process.

What is vehicle scrappage policy?

This is a policy in which our Govt will make a system on scrapping the vehicles older than 15 years of age which are still plying on the road.

What will be the benefits of Vehicle Scrappage Policy?

The benefits will be lesser pollution impact on the environment. As calculated, if these vehicles are scrapped then Govt can save considerable amount of fuel imports to India. Not only this but the pollution as I said earlier that it generates around 10 times the pollution of newly manufactured vehicles, we will be cutting out a substantial percentage of harmful emissions.

Moreover, since we know that there is an undergoing sales-slowdown in the auto sector so by incorporating this system in India, govt will try to encourage the sales of new vehicles in the market. Not only this but since older vehicle uses Bharat stage I and Bharat stage II norms, the fuel consumption is also high.

More employment can be generated if this policy comes into effect. New scrappage units will be created. A new source of business will prevail in the Indian economic sector.

Govt. will be able to cut down on imports of metals as the recycling plants will be operated across the country meeting the demands of supply for Automobile Manufacturers.

Possible Process under Vehicle Scrappage Policy?

Once implemented, you will have to visit the nearest authorized scrap dealer with your old vehicle and RC (Registration Certificate). The scrap dealer will check all the parts inside your vehicle, evaluate the possible price. It will be important to crosscheck the price compared to the condition of the parts of your vehicle as these dealers will try to bring down the price as much as he can so beware of it and bargain for the best value possible.
The chassis no. of the car will be cut from the vehicle and you have to surrender the RC with the chassis number indentation mark to the RTO. Now the RTO can either dump the registration number or it can transfer the vehicle in the name of another person for the new vehicle.

Why you should scrap your old car?

1st and most important thing is by doing this we will be contributing to a more safe, cleaner environment.

Secondly, govt is planning to provide rebates and concessions in purchasing new vehicles which will be financially profitable as well.

Third point is that if you plan to re-register your vehicle in another state (except Delhi NCR) the most important thing to note is that govt has increased the re-registration fees by 25 times. For example, if you are paying Rs. 600 currently, now you will have to spend Rs. 15000 for re-registration as per new plans. Same increments are done for commercial vehicles also.

So, why getting into strenuous re-registration process for an old vehicle which will be valid just for 5 years. Can't we contribute to a more healthier, cleaner and green environment which will be beneficial to the future of ours. If you calculate, you can find that scrapping a vehicle more than 15 years old can not only be beneficial to the environment but it will turn out to be more profitable to your pockets financially.
